How to hide buttons and sidebar items in ChatGPT

Updated

Short answer

ChatGPT lets you collapse the sidebar, but it has no setting to remove single items or buttons from the page. To hide them, use an extension: in ChatTheme, click Pick in the side panel, point at the parts you never use (for example Upgrade plan or Explore GPTs) and send. You can also just type "hide the Upgrade button". The message box and send button can never be hidden, and every tweak is one click to undo.

What ChatGPT lets you hide on its own

The sidebar button at the top left closes and reopens the whole sidebar. That's it: there's no setting to remove individual entries, the upgrade prompts or other buttons, and closing the sidebar also hides your chat history.

A userstyle (for example with Stylus) or a content blocker's element picker, such as uBlock Origin's, can hide page elements too. Both work by matching ChatGPT's own page structure, so you have to find the right element yourself, and the rule can quietly stop working or hide the wrong thing when the site changes.

Hide parts of ChatGPT by pointing at them

ChatTheme's Pick tool works like a content blocker's element picker, but you don't write any rules: the AI turns what you picked into the tweak and checks that the page still works.

  1. 1

    Install ChatTheme

Add ChatTheme to Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc from the Chrome Web Store and sign in (free).

  2. 2

    Apply any theme

On chatgpt.com, open the ChatTheme side panel and click a theme. Tweaks are saved with the theme you use.

  3. 3

    Click Pick

In the Create tab, click Pick, then click the parts of the page you want gone. ↑ selects the box around it, ↓ goes back. Press Done or Enter when you're finished.

  4. 4

    Send

Send with an empty message to hide what you picked, or say what should happen instead ("move it to the bottom", "make it smaller").

Or just ask

Instead of picking, describe it in the Create tab: "hide the Upgrade button", "hide Explore GPTs and Library", "move Projects to the bottom". If the AI isn't sure which part you mean, it asks you to point at it.

What can't be hidden

Some parts can never be hidden: the message box, the send button, open menus, and the last way to open the sidebar. If a tweak would hide one of them, ChatTheme switches that tweak off on its own and tells you in the side panel.

Undo a tweak

Every tweak is listed under Customize › Site tweaks with a remove button. Alt+Shift+T switches all of ChatTheme off at once, tweaks included; press it again to bring everything back.

What ChatTheme sees

To find the part you mean, ChatTheme sends the names of the page's buttons, links and labels along with your request. It never sends your conversation titles, your messages, what you're typing, or your name or email. Tweaks stay yours: themes you share or install from the community never carry them.
